Why do I need an editor? Can’t my spouse/friend/coworker just proofread my work?
Sure they can, and they’ll probably give some helpful suggestions too. But if you want a professional product, you need a professional editor.
What kind of editing do I need?
The various types of edits are described here. If you’re not sure which level of editing is right for you, let’s chat! I can help you determine what service will help you reach your goal.
Editing services sound kind of expensive. Why do they cost so much?
Good editing takes experience, and it takes time. The Editorial Freelancers Association offers the following as a guideline for the speed at which various levels of editing might be completed:
- Proofreading: 9–13 pages (2250–3250 words) an hour
- Basic copyediting: 5–10 pages (1250–2500 words) an hour
- Heavy copyediting: 2–3 pages (500–1250 words) an hour
- Substantive or line editing: 1–6 pages (250–1500 words) an hour
- Developmental editing: 1–5 pages (250–1250 words) an hour
Do you offer free samples of your work?

What’s with the website name?
You know that satisfaction you get from untangling a tricky knot in a necklace or a piece of string? (Okay, maybe that’s just me.) Manuscript editing can be like that for both editors and authors. You start with a piece of writing that wants to be beautiful, but some little knots and tangles get in the way of a smooth read. A good editor unties those knots and helps you achieve a clean, beautiful finished product.
Also, I just really love yarn. Fellow yarn lovers, you can find me on Ravelry under knits4pixies.
