Services
Terms for editing services can be fluid. A copyedit can incorporate elements of line editing, and line editing will always involve copyediting.
Line Editing
(Sometimes called substantive or content editing.) The editor looks for broader issues such as point of view, inconsistent verb tense, and logical progression of the plot or argument, as well as sentence-level issues with diction, syntax, and wordiness. Line editing often involves more substantial rewriting and reorganizing than copyediting does.
Copyediting
A copyeditor makes corrections to spelling, grammar, usage, and punctuation and strives to ensure accuracy and consistency.
Proofreading
Proofreaders look for issues with typography, typesetting, and page makeup, as well as glaring errors in grammar and punctuation. They often compare the current version of the manuscript or project to an earlier version and ensure changes have been made correctly.
Rates
Editorial Rates
Editorial rates are determined by several factors, including length, complexity, and how quickly the project must be returned. I am pleased to offer competitive rates based on industry standards.
The Editorial Freelancers Association has a helpful chart listing common editorial rates here.
